If there’s one request I get the most this time of year, it’s what to wear for fall family pictures, and I totally get it! Planning outfits for the family whether it’s for photos, a holiday or an event can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Since my kids were babies, I’ve always looked to Old Navy for all my family photo outfits. I mean, it’s kind of a no-brainer since it’s a one-stop shop for men, women, kids, and babies. They do a fantastic job releasing pieces each fall that perfectly coordinate with one another, but not in that obvious old-school family picture way.
I have my own strategy when it comes to choosing family outfits. I start with one family member and choose their outfit first, then I build the other outfits around that. You might assume that I always start with my outfit, and you wouldn’t be completely wrong. There are times when I see something I really want to wear and start with me. But in all honestly, it changes every year. Some years I start with my son or daughter, especially if I see something I really love. I will say that I rarely start with my husband’s outfit because he’s actually pretty easy. He’ll wear anything I pick out, and Old Navy offers so many great basics in tons of color options.
I knew we’d be shooting photos outside this year with a very simple outdoor background, so any color scheme would do. For this look, I started with my daughter’s dress. I absolutely loved the color and style, and that added texture of the dots just adds a little more dimension. And those Chelsea boots were too good to pass up! The great thing about the color of her dress is that it really pairs well with so many colors- navy, coral, olive, so the sky was the limit.
Next came my dress. There were hints of that golden mustard, which coordinated nicely. The print of my dress is so pretty, but it is busy, so I figured that I’d probably be the only one wearing a print. When choosing my son’s shirt, I wanted something short sleeve and a bit more casual, so this striped tee was perfect. I chose the color to pull out the hints of green in my dress.
As for the dads, when in doubt, a white button-up always works. I was initially going to go with a navy sweater, but it just looked too heavy compared to the rest of our outfits, so this lightweight button-down with brown pants was the perfect fit.
Everyone was comfortable, and the pictures turned out amazing. I promise you that outfit planning won’t be stressful if you shop at Old Navy.
