Spring can look a bit different depending on where you live, but it seems to be one of those seasons where layers are an essential part of our outfits each day. This can also be true for any time of year when you work in a school. Your classroom might be too hot, too cold (why is it never just right?). I always suggest investing in classic pieces like lightweight cardigans, blazers, or jackets that can be easily thrown over your outfit for extra warmth and polished finish. Not only do layering pieces add dimension to your look, but they also provide versatility, allowing you to adapt to changing temperatures both indoors and out. I’ll be sharing my go-to layering pieces as well as a few that are trending this season.
Denim Jackets
Denim or Jean Jackets have to be my number one layering essential. I especially love wearing them over dresses. They’re an easy fix to transition a sleeveless top or dress into a look that’s appropriate for the classroom too. I personally recommend Old Navy for a classic true denim jacket, and Maurice’s for a stretchy softer jacket. And, if you’re a big denim jacket lover, like me, you may want to add colorful or embellished jackets to your rotation too!
Classic Cardigans
Cardigans are a staple in any teacher’s wardrobe. They are versatile, comfortable, and come in a variety of styles and colors. A neutral-colored cardigan can be paired with a blouse and trousers for a polished look, while a vibrant one can add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral outfit. Amazon, J. Crew, and Old Navy are typically my go-tos for cardigans. Walmart also releases seasonal cardigans each year too.
Coatigans
A coatigan is one of my favorite pieces for this time of year! It’s a mix between a light coat and a cardigan. It’s chic and professional, and it can quickly elevate any outfit. I often get asked if I wear it as a coat or as part of my outfit. You can absolutely wear it as both, but I often wear it over a tank/blouse as part of my outfit.
Blazers
A well-fitted blazer is a must-have for teachers. It instantly elevates any outfit and gives off a professional vibe. Choose a classic silhouette in a neutral color like black, navy, or gray for versatility. Pair it with a blouse, dress, or a casual top and jeans for a smart-casual look. My all time favorite blazers are from Gibsonlook. While these are pricier than what I’d normally spend, the quality is unmatched, and the fit is feminine and comfortable.
Lightweight Jackets
Lightweight jackets are perfect for transitioning between seasons. Choose a versatile style like a trench coat or a utility jacket that can be layered over a blouse, dress, or sweater. Look for features like pockets, adjustable waist ties, or a removable hood for added functionality. Depending on where you live, a good raincoat is also essential, especially if you have bus duty!
